Fight Tech-Induced Loneliness with Hotline HACK*BLOSSOM

Next hotline hours: TBA! Keep your eyes on Twitter and Facebook for hotline announcements, or get in touch via noah@hackblossom.org.

Technology can be lonely. We're constantly connected to friends and quasi-human corporate social media, but these online connections are asymmetric, asynchronous. We don't feel the same vibrancy and intimacy as engaging face-to-face (or face-to-quasi-human-corporation!) Inspired by sociologist Sherry Tuckle's Reclaiming Conversation, HACK*BLOSSOM wants to be more than just an impersonal byte of data in your news feeds.

.

Introducing: Hotline HACK*BLOSSOM, a phonecall experiment in forging friendships for the digital future. Contact us at noah@hackblossom.org, or DM us on Twitter or Facebook, to set up a phonecall to shoot the shit. Yes, an old-fashioned phonecall. We can talk about cybersecurity, technology, social media, anti-fascism, art, history, fitness, life problems, or anything that's on your mind. We'll keep a max of 20 minutes so it's no pressure. We don't care about awkwardness, so don't feel nervous about speaking your mind, a bit of silence, or even hanging up.

.

Why a phonecall and not a text or email? Well, if we're using a phone, we can't be distracted by texts or notifications. Full, undivided attention is precious these days! Not to mention, talking on the phone relays so many more emotional cues + spontaneous ideas that are crucial for building empathy and knowledge. We tend to feel "ugh!" at phonecalls because texts feel safer, but why not turn that discomfort into a point of resistance? What can we build when we embrace uncertainty?

.

HACK*BLOSSOM is a project to transcend the social and political limitations of modern technology. We're not just a facebook page, a twitter account, or a website. We're human beings (typically just one!) who firmly believe that in a time of social and political crisis, we have to reclaim our capacity to connect on our own terms. For us, internet friends who took a risk to meet up with us or say hello IRL that have become treasured connections; these connections will be increasingly vital in the coming dystopia we call home.

.

Who knows? Maybe you'll have a nice conversation! We could both learn something! Or maybe we hate eachother! Either way, there's so much possibility beyond what's reduced by liking, commenting, and texting. Give us a call! We'd love to hear from you <3
