What we fight for
HACK*BLOSSOM publishes creative work that strives for an inclusive culture of technology defined by safety, autonomy, and love. We are always open to submissions and pitches.
We emphasize work that is actionable and nurturing. At the end of your work, the reader should be stronger. This strength can be drawn from learning about helpful new skills, technologies, or organizations. This can be strength in solidarity, from being able to identify with your subject matter or experiences. Strength can emerge from speculative visions of the future, of what digital spaces could or should be. Ultimately, we want to expose our readers to the wealth of opportunity and support that awaits them in a better digital world.
The Submission Process
All submissions or pitches can be emailed to email@example.com. We will acknowledge receipt of your submission within 2-3 days. Confirmation of acceptance or rejection will take place within a few weeks, though we strive to accomplish this process within a week. If your work is time-sensitive, please note this clearly in your email.
There are two principle categories of work that we publish: Resources and Creative.
Resources are guides, tutorials, walkthroughs, or summaries of digitally-based action that provides tangible value to the reader. Our gold standard for this work is our DIY Guide to Feminist Cybersecurity. Ultimately, your resource should be reasonably accessible to a layperson. If there are prerequisite concepts or technologies involved, they should either be explained in your resource or linked to an explanatory resource elsewhere. If your resource demands more than a text article on HACK*BLOSSOM's website, please contact us about accommodating you with server or programming support.
Creative Work consist of essays, articles, memoirs, short stories, poetry, videos, art, music, video games, and any other medium that expresses the values of action and nurturing within the context of digital spaces. We are open-minded about whatever form your work takes, though it must be accessible to a layperson. Complex technical subjects should not be bewildering or intimidating, though they do not have to be easy. Such accessibility is at your creative discretion; we trust that your work will take the most beneficial form that you see fit. If your work requires infrastructure, such as an app or website, please contact us about accommodating you with technical support.
HACK*BLOSSOM believes in fairly compensated labor, so we are prepared to pay you for your work. We are a small grassroots organization with no advertising revenue, thus we are obliged to be discriminating in how we allocate our meagre budget. If you enjoy some amount of financial privilege, we kindly ask you to consider submitting your work as a charitable act. This enables us to publish the work of creatives whose income relies more heavily on their creative labor.
